Shelter From The Storm - Tony Dunbar

Shelter From The Storm is the fourth novel in the Tubby Dubonnet series. This book was free when I downloaded it. It's still free through kindleunlimited.

Tubby Dubonnet is a lawyer living in New Orleans. When Mardi Gras comes around, the weather rebels and the whole city is flooded. It just so happens that a bank job, that's not really a bank job, takes place at the same time. As Tubby is trying to escape the water, he and the bank robbers collide. The result is bodies piling up and Tubby doing his best to solve the crime. This novel is very parochial, and would be much more interesting if I knew anything about New Orleans. Still, this is a good murder mystery and highly recommended.

Sarah's Courage - Karen Leet

Sarah's Courage is a children's book with special meaning for Kentuckians. This book is part fictional story and party Kentucky history.

This book is described as a Kentucky frontier kidnapping. The first part is a fictional story based on the true-life kidnapping of Daniel Boone's daughter Jemima. The second part of the book is a recounting of Jemima's kidnapping by Indians, and many tales of life in frontier Kentucky.

I found the first part interesting and entertaining, and expect my grandkids to feel the same. The second part was more dry and a little preachy. It's too bad that the author felt the need to season an interesting historical book with tidbits intended to make our ancestors seem guilty of everything from genocide to ruining the environment. My advice is read part one and then use part two for a door stop. Part one is still highly recommended.

Rush Revere and the Star-Spangled Banner - Rush Limbaugh

Rush Revere and the Star-Spangled Banner is the fourth kid's novel in the Adventures of Rush Revere series. You'll be in better shape if you read them in order.

Rush Revere and his crew head to Washington D.C. on a summer field trip. The goal is to explore the monuments and famous buildings located there. While on their field trip Liberty takes some of the crew back to the constitutional convention in Philadelphia in 1787. Later they time travel to a British ship in Baltimore Harbor in 1814, where the national anthem is being written. This is another exceptional children's book that provides a good adventure and a look at history the way it really happened. Very highly recommended.

STATELINE - Dave Stanton

STATELINE is the first novel in the Dan Reno series. This book is free for the kindle.

Dan Reno is veteran a PI. He's not too crazy about his boss, but it's a living. When Dan gets invited to a big fancy wedding in Lake Tahoe, he thinks he's just going to have a fun weekend. Instead Dan finds himself embroiled in murder, sex, drugs, and police corruption that crosses both sides of the California/Nevada state line. This is definitely an adult story. The action is intense and the bodies keep piling up. This one was a little too raunchy for my taste, but it's still a great read. Highly recommended.

Chain of Command - C. G. Cooper

Chain of Command is the ninth novel in the Corps Justice series. This book is available through kindleunlimited.

When a scheming industrialist decides it's time for the Marine Corp to be destroyed, it's Cal and the Jefferson Group who are called on to stop the plot. More adventure and action with the good guys winning. Well almost. Very highly recommended.

The Immortal Nicholas - Glenn Beck

The Immortal Nicholas is Christmas story for adults, told from a completely new perspective. Not that Christmas! This is about the one where Christ is still included.

A couple of thousand years ago, give or take, a simple man name Agios lived with his wife and son. Agios heartbreak and grief would lead him on an amazing journey, with some legendary traveling companions. A journey that would last for eternity. This is an amazing book. Whether you're a Christian or not, this is a story that will keep you reading long into the night. Very highly recommended.

Disavowed - C. G. Cooper

Disavowed is the eighth novel in the Corps Justice series. This book is available through kindleunlimited.

Andy Andrews is a US Marine serving with the CIA. When Andy disappears after a mysterious call to Cal, it's up to Cal and his men to find and rescue him. The CIA has disavowed Andy, so the team from the Jefferson Group are on their own. The question is how far does the corruption go and can they find Andy in time. Another great Corps Justice story. Very highly recommended.

Moral Imperative - C. G. Cooper

Moral Imperative is the seventh novel in the Corps Justice series. Reading this series in order would help. This book is available through kindleunlimited.

It's about time. Cal and his team take on ISIS. They're fortified with three-man teams from a number of other countries and the result is glorious. Very highly recommended.

Dying for a Living - Kory M. Shrum

Dying for a Living is the first novel in the Jesse Sullivan series. This book is free for the kindle. It's a great story.

Jesse Sullivan is a Necronite. She gets real upset when she'd referred to as a zombie. Jesse has died over 60 times. It's what she does for a living. Now someone is trying to permanently kill Jesse, and that means there's a mystery to solve. This is a great new twist on the supernatural genre and well worth reading. Especially when it's free. Very highly recommended.

Nemesis: Book Two - David Beers

Nemesis: Book Two is the second book in the Nemesis series. You must read this series in the right order. Book one is still free. There's no book three yet, but there will have to be one.

Things are getting more dangerous in Grayson. Michel's Dad has a sobering moment. Then Michael's Dad and Bryan's Dad hook up and start looking for their kids. Unfortunately, everywhere they look they find dead bodies. Michael and Julie are being held captive by the "cleanup" team, while Bryan and Thera are still possessed by Morena. Morena is trying to rescue her children, but the "cleanup" team is in her way. This is going to be much worse than Bolivia. Very highly recommended.

Beyond the Veil - B. B. Griffith

Beyond the Veil is the second novel in the Vanished series. You should read them in order. Follow the Crow is the first. I suspect there will be more eventually. There should be.

Grant Romer is just eight years old. His parents have been dead almost two years, so Grant lives with his grandpa in Midland Texas. Grant can see the thin places and they're getting thinner.

It's been about a year since Ben, Caroline, Owen, and Joey beat the agents and saved the bell. Ben is still the walker, Caroline and Owen are on the road now, trying to find the bell, and Joey is still working in the thinning. Caroline and Owen are getting help from other members of the Circle of the Crow, but the bell hasn't been found yet.

All that changes with Grant, when a new Keeper is found. Can the Circle of the Crow save him? It's going to be an interesting battle. Very highly recommended.

Lethal Misconduct - C. G. Cooper

Lethal Misconduct is the sixth novel in the Corps Justice series. This book is available through kindleunlimited.

To be safe, SSI has split off the covert actions portion of their work, and put Cal in charge. Their new facility, near the University of Virginia campus, is starting to shape up. The latest problem they're looking into is to figure out how someone is curing cancer. This sounds like a good thing, until they discover what's really going on. Then it's time for Cal and his crew to stop the bad guys again. Very highly recommended.

National Burden - C. G. Cooper

National Burden is the fifth novel in the Corps Justice series. This book is available through kindleunlimited.

Now that Cal's cousin Travis is the new president's chief of staff, working closely with SSI is simpler. Cal is called in by President Zimmer when things get hot. What Cal and his crew discover is that foreign powers aren't the only ones trying to undermine the new president. Very highly recommended.

Cosega Shift - Brandt Legg

Cosega Shift is the third novel in the Cosega Sequence series. The series should be read in order.

A disappointing ending. More running from the NSA, FBI, Vatican, Mossad, and who knows who else. More mystical secrets revealed. More people killed. The trouble is the novel ran out of gas before the end. Actually there were so many unresolved issued it shouldn't be the end, but supposedly it is. Maybe Legg will write more novels in the series, but I doubt it. It ended with an epilogue instead of a cliff hanger this time. Still, you have to know how it ended. Recommended.

Cosega Storm - Brandt Legg

Cosega Storm is the second novel in the Cosega Sequence series. You must read book one, Cosega Search, before this book.

Rip and Gale make it down from the cliff hanger and continue to elude the Vatican, FBI, NSA, and even Booker. Eventually they split up, but it's a wild ride all the way. Then another cliff hanger. The third book is in the queue! Highly recommended.

Follow the Crow - B. B. Griffith

Follow the Crow is the first novel in the Vanished series. This book is free for the kindle.

Ben Dejooli lives with his father and his grandmother. Ben is a Navajo police officer on the Chaco Navajo Reservation. Ben has never been the same since he lost his sister six years ago. That's when Ben decided to be a cop. Now strange things are beginning to happen to Ben.

Caroline Adams is an oncology nurse at Albuquerque General. Caroline works one day a week at the health center on the Chaco reservation. She and Ben meet when he's admitted to the hospital after passing out. Ben thinks it's from a punch he took while on the job. Caroline thinks something else.

Dr. Owen Bennet works at Albuquerque General too. He's one of those doctors who respect what a nurse does. Little does Owen realize that he's about to be included in an adventure that will change everything he thought he knew.

This is a story where Navajo magic trumps medical science, and pretty much everything else. It's a great story, with a great ending, but there will be more. Very highly recommended.

Cosega Search is the first novel in the Cosega Sequence series. This book is free for the kindle.

Ripley Gaines is one of the world most famous archaeologists. Dr. Gaines' Cosega theory contradicts all of known human history. Now a fellow archaeologist has found an artifact and it appears Rip's theory has some proof. Someone doesn't want that proof to come to light. Rip and his friends are running for their lives. This is a great story with a literal cliff hanger at the end. Even though I hate cliff hangers I'm highly recommending this book.

CyberStorm - Matthew Mather

CyberStorm is a novel about the consequences of technology. You might like the internet now, but wait until you read this story. This book is available through kindleunlimited.

Mike Mitchell is a network engineer. He and his wife and son live in New York City. Is it a coincidence that the weather turns nasty just as the internet seems to have problems? When the SHTF, as preppers say, Mike and his family have to struggle just to stay alive. Being dependent on technology is the Achilles heel of modern times. This is a great book right up until the end. Unfortunately the ending is weak. Still highly recommended.

Presidential Shift - C. G. Cooper

Presidential Shift is the fourth novel in the Corps Justice series. This book is available through kindleunlimited.

Cal and his group are asked to help the president uncover a leak, just as the leak becomes a flood. The first lady and the vice-president are attacked and SSI is going to find the attackers or die trying. Another great thriller. Very highly recommended.

A Lonely Resurrection - Barry Eisler

A Lonely Resurrection is the second novel in the John Rain series. This book is free with

John Rain is ready to stop killing. The trouble is he's very good at it, and people don't want him to quit. When it becomes kill or be killed you don't want to bet against John. This is another smooth thriller set in Japan. Very highly recommended.

Nemesis: Book One - David Beers

Nemesis: Book One is the first section of the Nemesis series. This book is free for the kindle.

Morena is very old. Morena's been traveling though the cold of outer space for over 50 million years. She's trying to escape the destruction of her home planet. Now she's hoping earth can be her new planet. What to do about those pesky humans.

Michael, Thera, Bryan, and Julie are high school seniors in Grayson Georgia. They're worried about what's coming, but their worries are more about college and jobs. They don't even know about Morena...yet.

This is a great science fiction story. There is suspense, danger, and some teenage angst. The angst is soon transferred from high school drama to just staying alive. Very highly recommended.

Ready Player One - Ernest Cline

Ready Player One is a novel about a future where the whole world escapes to a video game.

In the year 2044 there is OASIS and there is reality. As the saying goes, reality sucks. OASIS is a virtual reality escape for most humans. People work there, kids go to school there, and corporations kill people there. It's a lot like reality is some ways. Wade Watts grew up in OASIS. Wade's more comfortable in OASIS than reality. The founder of OASIS left a hidden Easter egg somewhere in OASIS before he died. Whoever finds it first gains ultimate control of OASIS. Wade is on a quest to find that egg, along with millions of other kids. He, and those who become his friends, have to find the egg before the evil IOI corporation does. This book is a hoot for anyone who's an 80's trivia buff or any kind of video gamer. It's exciting and scary and a great read. Very highly recommended.

Prime Asset - C. G. Cooper

Prime Asset is the third novel in the Corps Justice Series. This book is free for the kindle.

When it comes to technology, Neil Patel is the cyber wizard who keeps SSI in the game. Neil is SSI's head of research and development. Neil went to a technology conference in Jackson Hole Wyoming and disappeared. Now Cal and the rest of the operational team have to find Neil before it's too late. This story has plenty of action, some nasty weather, and even a grizzly bear. Very highly recommended.

The Martian - Andy Weir

The Martian is a novel about one man against nature. This time it's Martian nature. This book is awesome.

Mark Watney is an astronaut on the Ares 3 mission to Mars. Mark is the mission's botanist/mechanical engineer. It turns out these are great skills for getting stranded on a planet that's hostile to human life. Mark is going to need them.

This novel is amazing. You cry and laugh, and spend a whole lot of time holding your figurative breath. I can't even begin to understand how a movie could capture this. It couldn't. If you just go see the movie made from this book, you're cheating yourself out of a fantastic read. Very highly recommended.

Council of Patriots - C. G. Cooper

Council of Patriots is the second novel in the Corp Justice Series. This book is free for the kindle.

Cal Stokes and his SSI team are about to be tested again. Blackmail is the game and the goal is the overthrow of the current administration and the rise of Japan. This is another action filled thriller. Very highly recommended.

Small Magics - Ilona Andrews

Small Magics is a collection of five stories. It serves as a great introduction to the author's work.

In the world that Andrews writes about, magic and technology don't mix. When magic started to intrude at regular intervals, some people became powerful predators and others became scared prey. These stories are about the people who have magic. Some are villains and some are heroes, but they are all interesting. I particularly liked Of Swine and Roses. Talk about the worst date ever. Very highly recommended.

The Heretic - Joseph Nassise

The Heretic is the first novel in the Templar Chronicles series. This book is free for the kindle.

Cade Williams commands Echo Team, one of six elite combat units in the Knights Templar. These combat teams are the Catholic version of SWAT. When evil starts to attack Knights Templar locations in search of something, Cade's team is given the task of finding and stopping them. This story is full of supernatural action. Good guys and bad guys have some special powers. The question is who comes out on top. Highly recommended.

The Mentor - Rita Carla Francesca Monticelli

The Mentor is a murder mystery that spans decades and ultimately comes down to revenge. This is a free Amazon Prime book for October.

Eric Shaw is Scotland Yard's chief forensics detective. Eric rescued a young seven year old girl after her whole family was brutally murdered. None of the attackers were every caught. But that was twenty years ago. Now Eric is pursuing a killer who seems to be parroting the killings in that attack. Who and why are the questions he and his team are trying to answer.

This book is good, but it's so confusing I'm still now sure who all the characters are. To top that off, the ending is weak at best. Still, I recommend the book since I got it free.

Hopcross Jilly - Patricia Briggs

Hopcross Jilly is a complete graphic novel from the Mercy Thompson Collection. I recommend reading on a color tablet instead of a kindle.

Mercy and Adam discover the bodies of long dead children while they're out running with the pack. The bodies are old, but the police are pursuing the investigation.

Jesse Hauptman is Adam's daughter and Mercy's step-daughter. The kids from school aren't always kind to Jesse. Especially since the werewolves came out, and Jesse's Dad is the Alpha of the local werewolf pack. Finding the mystery child killer becomes more urgent when kids begin to go missing from Jesse's school. The ending is much too predictable, but the story is still good.

I'm not a big fan of graphic novels. Nothing about this one has changed my mind. I much prefer to let my imagination conjure up the locations, heroes, and villains that words in a novel paint. I was just desperate for a Briggs fix. Recommended, but you have to read/view this on a color tablet. A kindle doesn't do it justice.

Abducted - T.R. Ragan

Abducted is the first novel in the Lizzy Gardner series. No cliff hangers though. Just a good ending.

When a serial killer called Spiderman was killing teenage girls, Lizzy Gardner was the one who got away. Now Lizzy is determined to help women protect themselves from the kind of predator who kidnapped her. But Spiderman was never caught and Lizzy has spent her whole life waiting. Now is the time. Spiderman is back, and Lizzy is his target. This time she's ready. Very highly recommended.

Shifting Shadows - Patricia Briggs

Shifting Shadows is an collection of stories from the world of Mercy Thompson. That would be a world with shape shifters, vampires, fae, and other magic creatures.

There are ten short stories and two outtakes, as Briggs calls them, in this collection. They're all excellent. Be warned. There may be some spoilers if you haven't been keeping up with Briggs books. Shame on you if not. I suggest reading Silver, the first short story in the collection, and then skipping to the first outtake from Silver Borne. You should be pleased. Make sure you go back and read all the stories though. They're all a pleasure. Very highly recommended.

Pale Queen Rising - A. R. Kahler

Pale Queen Rising is the first novel in the Pale Queen series. This could be the start of another great adult fantasy series.

Claire is an assassin. The Winter Kingdom Faerie Queen's assassin to be precise. Claire is also the Faerie Queen's only daughter. When the kingdom is in danger, Claire gets to kill. Claire has some serious work to do, since the kingdom's supply of dream is drying up. Someone is to blame and they're Claire's next job. This is an interesting take on the fae fantasy, and filled with action and suspense. There is a bit more soap opera than I prefer. Still highly recommended.

Dead Heat - Patricia Briggs

Dead Heat is the fourth novel in the Alpha & Omega series. Briggs never fails. I just wish she wrote faster.

Charles and Anna are taking a break. They're headed to Arizona to visit with old friends and to pick out a new horse for Anna. Then the fae decide to cause trouble, and Charles and Anna are in the thick of it. It's made worse since this fae likes to target children. There's plenty of action and adventure, but it's leavened by humor as Briggs always does. Very highly recommended.

The 5th Wave - Rick Yancey

The 5th Wave is the first novel in the 5th Wave series. This book is about an alien invasion in five parts.

Cassie Sullivan has survived waves one through four. Now, while the fifth wave is breaking around her, Cassie is determined to rescue her brother. From what is not clear, but rescue him she will. Last time she saw him he was waving from the back of a yellow school bus. This is a great book. The various threads eventually weave into a whole. I'm looking forward to the next story in the series. Very highly recommended.

A Clean Kill in Tokyo - Barry Eisler

A Clean Kill in Tokyo is the first novel in the John Rain series. Kindleunlimited.

John Rain is an assassin. Rain specializes in making it look like natural causes. He's very good at his job. When Rain finds himself being pulled in by the consequences of his last job, things get complicated fast. The woman kind of complicated. Getting himself and the woman out of this alive is even more complicated. Very highly recommended.

Darknet - Matthew Mather

Darknet is a scary thriller about how close we really are to machines taking over. Kindleunlimited.

Jake O'Connell is a stock broker. Jake works for company that may be pushing the edges of legal, but Jake's friend Sean had helped set up their trading software, and Jake trusts Sean. Then Sean is killed in an accident that may not be an accident. Suddenly everyone is out to get Jake. Jake and a small band of friends find themselves fighting for their lives, but from what? If you're not careful this book will have you throwing away your cell phone, trashing your computers, and leaving the grid for good. Very highly recommended.

The Devil's Waters - David L. Robbins

The Devil's Waters is the first novel in the USAF Pararescue Thriller series. Kindleunlimited.

Pararescue is like Seals, Rangers, and Recon all wrapped into one, with a side of paramedic. These people are some serious operators, but they'd rather save your life than take it. When they get tangled with a bunch of Somali pirates the body count is bound to go up. Great action and suspense. Very highly recommended.

Make Me - Lee Child

Make Me is the 20th Jack Reacher Novel. They don't come out often enough for me.

Reacher has no reason but curiosity when he hops off the train in Mother's Rest. Reacher is determined to find out how the town got its name. This is wheat country and the tallest structures are the grain elevators. Reacher is momentarily mistaken for someone else, and when he falls in with ex-FBI agent and private eye Michelle Chang, he's intrigued. Before his curiosity is satisfied they cross the country looking for clues and end up in Mother's Rest finding the bad guys. Another great Reacher novel. Very highly recommended.

Contract to Kill - Andrew Peterson

Contract to Kill is the fifth novel in the Nathan McBride Series. Unfortunately the last one published. There will hopefully be more. Kindleunlimited.

When a friend of Nathan witnesses an execution style murder, and fears for his life, he calls Nathan for help. Nathan and Harv become embroiled in a situation much more complicated than an execution. The killers are hunting Nathan's friend, and Nathan and his friends. It turns out national security is part of the problem too. Highly recommended.

Ready to Kill - Andrew Peterson

Ready to Kill is the fourth novel in the Nathan McBride Series. Kindleunlimited.

Nathan and Harv could probably count Nicaragua as their least favorite place to be. When they're contacted, through the CIA, by an old contact there, they have to head back into the country and see if they can clean up a mess they didn't anticipate. Being a sniper team is like riding a bike. You never forget how. They need all those memories on this mission. Very highly recommended.

Traitor - Mark Eller

Traitor is the first novel in the Turner Chronicles series. This book is 99 cents for the kindle.

In a parallel universe magic is not only possible. It's common. But to really use your magic you need a magic stone. Aaron Turner is one person who can travel between realms. He's a cripple in his home world, where he's forced to help an ambitious militia general. In the target realm Aaron owns a simple general store and will eventually change the world. Very highly recommended.

Option to Kill - Andrew Peterson

Option to Kill is the third novel in the Nathan McBride Series. Kindleunlimited.

Nathan gets a mysterious text message from a 12 year old girl named Lauren, who's been kidnapped. Lauren is a 12 year old girl who knows more about Nathan than anyone should. Nathan not only rescues Lauren, but he has to rescue other girls and eventually Lauren's mother. The addition of a kid and her unique perspective really makes this book exceptional. Very highly recommended.

Forced to Kill - Andrew Peterson

Forced to Kill is the second novel in the Nathan McBride Series. Kindleunlimited.

When a body with distinctive scars shows up at the bottom of a lake, Nathan and Harv begin tracking the sadist who tortured Nathan in Nicaragua. The hunt is on. Very highly recommended.

Transfer of Power - Vince Flynn

Transfer of Power is the first novel in the Mitch Rapp Series. This book was free with kindleunlimited.

The CIA knows that their two most wanted Islamic terrorists are planning something. They put Mitch Rapp on their trail. One is captured and the other is not. While they "interrogate" the captured terrorist, the one who's running free does the unthinkable. He takes over the White House. The CIA and Mitch are going to have to find a way to get it back. This is one of those books where you can't seem to find a good place to take a break. Falling asleep very early in the morning usually makes that decision for me. Very highly recommended.

The Lost Starship - Vaughn Heppner

The Lost Starship is the first novel in the Lost Starship Series. This book is free with kindleunlimited, which is not free.

Earth is under attack by the New Men. There is one chance to beat back their superior minds, bodies, and technology. The lost starship of legend. Captain Maddox of Star Watch Intelligence is tasked with gathering an unorthodox team of specialists, and finding that lost starship. The future of the human race may depend on it. There is action, adventure, and plenty of it. The characters tend to spend too much time talking in my opinion, but the books is still good. Highly recommended.
