Going Dark - Ann Christy

Going Dark is the first novel in the Silo 49 series. This book is free for the kindle. I recommend reading Wool first, as the Silo 49 series takes place in the Wool universe.

Graham Newton is the head of IT for Silo 49 and the only one who knows the truth. Silo 49 is failing, but that's not the whole truth. Graham knows why Silo 49 is failing, and just how desperate things are. Then he overhears a conversation in Silo One and things get even worse. You really should read Wool before this book, but it's free too. Both are great stories. Highly recommended.

Wild Born - Brandon Mull

Wild Born is the first novel in the Spirit Animals series. This book is free for the kindle. There are games and other media available with this story.

In the world of Erdas, each child must drink the nectar at age eleven to see if they can call a spirit animal. Four children, one from each of the four lands of Erdas, call the four great beasts who died in the last war. The four fallen have been called for a reason. Erdas is in peril. The Devourer has also returned. This is a great story. The children who call the great beasts are all different, as are the beasts themselves. The challenges they face, and the evil that is rising are daunting, but the children are up to the task. There's a cliff hanger of sorts, but the story ends well. Highly recommended.

The Gray and Guilty Sea - Scott William Carter, Jack Nolte

The Gray and Guilty Sea is the first novel in the Garrison Gage series. This book is free for the kindle. Snap this one up while it's still free.

Then Garrison finds a body in the surf and his world turns upside down. Can Garrison keep from getting caught up in this mystery? If he decides he can't let it go, can he solve it? This is a great story. The characters are believable, the suspense is palpable, and the angst is handled with grace. Very highly recommended.

Crux - Moira Rogers

Crux is the first novel in the Southern Arcana series. This book is free for the kindle. Be warned there are explicit sex scenes in this book.

Mackenzie Brooks was tending bar and teaching dance classes. Not exactly living her dream, but pointed in the right direction. Then the stalking started. Now Mackenzie has escaped to her fourth city and she's tired of running. Can her new boss help her? Can the private investigator her boss asked to follow and protect her help? What Mackenzie doesn't know is that supernatural is real and she's something other than human. This is an excellent story with suspense, danger, and great characters. Just be aware the sex is explicit. Highly recommended.

Galdoni - Cheree Alsop

Galdoni is the first novel in the Galdoni series. This book is free for the kindle. There's nothing quite like a young-adult flying gladiator love story.

Kale is a Galdoni. His official designation is KL426. When they temporarily shut down the arena, Kale escaped like many others. Kale was found and protected by people who cared about his humanity more than the Galdoni reputation. People who might be able to help him set things right. Can Kale survive the changes required? Can a Galdoni feel love? Are people created in test tubes really people at all? This is a great story for young and old adults. Very highly recommended.

Xoe - Sara C. Roethle

Xoe is the first novel in the Xoe Meyers Series. This book is free for the kindle.

Xoe Meyers seemed to be a normal high school junior, if a little anti-social to most people. Xoe definitely has a unique sense of friends and fashion. The friends she has are loyal though, and they understand Xoe's attitude. Then a new kid in school takes an interest in Xoe and her friends Lucy and Allison. When his interest turns to violence and kidnapping, Xoe and her friends discover there is a whole lot more to the world than they realized. Xoe is even more unique than she thought, and Xoe's uniqueness may be all that can save her and her friends lives. This is a great supernatural adventure for young adults. Werewolves, vampires, and demons spice up the plot. Highly recommended.

Wool - Hugh Howey

Wool This novella is part one of the Wool series. This book is free for the kindle.

Holston is done. He's not giving up. He's just hoping his wife was right. Holston is afraid she was wrong. This is a gripping tale of someone willing to take a leap of faith. The question is, what's he leaping into. This is a great story of a bleak dystopian future, but a future with some hope. Highly recommended.

Take the Monkeys and Run - Karen Cantwell

Take the Monkeys and Run is the first novel in the Barbara Marr Murder Mystery series. This book is free for the kindle.

Barbara Marr is a suburban stay-at-home Mom with three beautiful daughters and a husband who "needs some space." Barbara suspects that the space is for another woman. Barbara is not handling her husband leaving well. While she's laying awake late into the night, the mystery house next door, the one Barbara labeled the House of Many Bones, has some unexpected visitors. How this leads to murder and mayhem are the fun parts of the story. There's plenty murder and mayhem, but equal parts humor and domestic dystopia in this amazing novel. Can Barbara solve the mystery of the monkeys and get her husband back? Can she keep her neighbors and herself from being killed? Read and find out. Very highly recommended.

Embrace - Rachel Humphrey-D'aigle

Embrace is the third novel in the Fated Saga series. This book is 99 cents for the kindle, but it's part of the free three book Firemancer Collection, which contains the first three novels in the Fated Saga series. You should read these books in order, starting with Awaken and Shifting.

After eleven months traveling with the Svoda Gypsies, Meghan and Colin Jacoby are still growing in their use of magic. Meghan is embracing her Firemancer abilities and Colin seems to have strong magic and endless energy. Now the twins are dealing with the rules in their latest destination, Eidolon's Valley. Everyone is forbidden to do magic while the gypsies are on the edge of Eidolon's Valley. This makes school impossible, so the children are all on break. The gypsies are also forbidden to set foot in the valley itself. Colin and Meghan will discover why firsthand. The question is, will they survive. More magical adventures for the Jacoby twins. Highly recommended.

Shifting - Rachel Humphrey-D'aigle

Shifting is the second novel in the Fated Saga series. This book is 99 cents for the kindle, but it's part of the free three book Firemancer Collection, which contains the first three novels in the Fated Saga series. You should read these books in order, starting with Awaken.

At the end of Awaken, Meghan and Colin Jacoby were battling Scratchers with their uncle. In Shifting the twins have been shifted, along with the Svoda Gypsies, into another dimension. There is no going back. Meghan and Colin will have to learn to survive in this new world where magic is normal. They both find they have talents and a past they weren't aware of. Another great young adult fantasy. Highly recommended.

Stallions at Burnt Rock - Paul Bagdon

Stallions at Burnt Rock is the first novel in the West Texas Sunrise series. This book is free for the kindle.

It's been ten years since the end of the civil war. There are a lot of bad men roaming the west. Lee Morgan owns the 600 acre Busted Thumb horse farm in West Texas, outside of the town of Burnt Rock. Lee is satisfied with her operation. She's trying to breed the perfect working ranch horse. Lee is a woman in a man's world, but she's making it work. Then Lee and her fellow horse breeder Jonas Dwyer decide a good way to showcase their horses would be a race at Burnt Rock's Harvest Days Festival. The race begins to attract some bad men, and no one could have predicted the trouble that comes. This is a great western adventure with plenty of riding, fighting, and shooting. Highly recommended.

The Empty Quarter - David L. Robbins

The Empty Quarter is a book that almost refuses to be put down. If you like military adventure and thrills, this story will more than satisfy your needs. This novel is $4.99 for the kindle. It was free when I downloaded it. I can loan this book to someone with a kindle. If you're interested let me know.

The men and women of the United States Air Force Pararescue are Combat Rescue Officers. They're part of the United States Air Force Special Operations Command. CROs are some of the best trained, toughest, and most sacrificing men and women in our armed forces. Their mission is to save lives, not take them. They're known as the Guardian Angels. This story follows a team of CROs on a mission into the Empty Quarter, the vast desert that spans Saudi Arabia and portions in Yemen. When the mission goes sideways, the CROs are forced to make some tough decisions. Lives will be lost and lives will be saved. Which lives is the question. This is a fantastic book. I fell asleep reading it and woke up to start again. Very highly recommended.

Rushed: Something Wicked - Brian Harmon

Rushed: Something Wicked is the third novel in the Rushed series. Now I have to wait for the next book to be published. It'll be worth the wait. Make sure you read Rushed and Rushed: The Unseen before reading this one.

Eric Fortrell and his wife Karen are beginning to get amorous when they're interrupted by someone knocking on their door. It's a teenage boy telling Eric that he's needed to save the life of the kid's Mom and sisters. He claims the Magic Man has already killed his Grandpa and one sister and Eric is the only one who can save the rest of the family. Most people would shrug this off as a joke, but Eric has considerable experience with strange, for a high school English teacher, and this isn't even close to the strangest he's heard. Even though his anniversary is this weekend, Eric explains to Karen that he has to go. Eric is about to embark on a mission that will add a whole new level of strange to his experience. Karen is going to be mad. Another great adventure that I couldn't put down. I think I've found one of my new favorite authors. Very highly recommended.

Rushed: The Unseen - Brian Harmon

Rushed: The Unseen is the second novel in the Rushed series. This book isn't free, but if you read the first story Rushed, you have to read this book.

This time around, Eric Fortrell isn't having compelling dreams. Eric is coming out of the florist's shop and sees a former student sneak into an alley. What's unusual is that this student mysteriously disappeared six years ago without a trace. Eric decides to follow and begins another adventure into places where few others ever venture. Eric is going to places unseen. This is another great story by Harmon. Again, it's a blend of horror, humor, and fantasy that is hard to put down once you get started. The tale is full of interesting characters and scary creatures. And this book also has a great ending. Very highly recommended.

Releasing the Dragon - Stacie Simpson

Releasing the Dragon is the first novel in the Myths and Legends series. This book is free for the kindle. Note that this book includes intense sexual situations.

Serafina Leroux is a frustrated dancer. Because of a conflict with her dance director in college, Serafina abandoned dancing and took a job in an office. Then a mysterious package shows up on her desk and the next week she's trying out for job as a professional dancer at the Myths and Legends Casino Resort.

Donovan Drake is the owner of Myths and Legends. He looks like a handsome athletic man. Donovan has been named the most eligible bachelor in America half a dozen times, but Myths and Legends isn't what it seems, and neither is Donovan.

Myths and Legends is a sanctuary for supernaturals, and Donovan is the King of the Dragons. The creatures Donovan rules won a war with the evil vampires, but they've been under a curse ever since. It's been over 400 years since Donovan's clans have been able to mate. Not a single child has been born. Serafina may be the key to breaking the curse and freeing the supernaturals that Donovan rules.

The amount of sex in this book is frustrating. The story is good and the characters are interesting. If you can deal with the sex I highly recommend this book.

The Registry - Shannon Stoker

The Registry is the first novel in the Registry series. This book is $6.64, but it was free for the kindle when I downloaded it.

Mia Morrissey is almost 18 and looking forward to being listed on the registry. All young girls should be. That's their place in American society. Then Mia's sister Corinna shows up at Mia's home after escaping from her husband. Mia can't understand why anyone would want to escape from their husband, but before she's taken away Corinna tells Mia to look in her closet. What Mia discovers changes her view of the world forever. Mia's now focused on one thing, escape from America and her enslavement by the registry.

This book is yet another dystopian fantasy with an extremely pessimistic take on the future. Like some similar stories, this future America is completely unbelievable, but it does make for an interesting story. If this book was still free I'd recommend it. It's no longer free, so you might want to save your money.

Personal - Lee Child

Personal is the latest Jack Reacher novel. It's number 19 in the series. Lee Child does it again.

Reacher can't help himself. When the opportunity presents itself, he has to check the personal ads in the Army Times. There it is. Reacher is being paged. Someone tried to kill the president of France. How could that possibly involve Reacher? He's going to find out, and this time it's personal. Another great adventure with the ultimate off-the-grid hero. Very highly recommended.

Red Seas Under Red Skies - Scott Lynch

Red Seas Under Red Skies is the second novel in the Gentleman Bastards series. This book is $4.92 for the kindle, but at 786 pages it's a bargain. You have to read The Lies of Locke Lamora first. Trust me, it's worth it.

Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen survived the debacle in Camorr to resurface in Tal Verrar. Their plans were a simple bit of thievery. A plan that was two years into it's execution, and about to pay off. Then they ran afoul of the Archon of Tal Verrar. Their plans changed. Thievery and piracy are close cousins. Now Locke and Jean must learn to sail. A less likely pair of land-huggers could hardly be found. This is another amazing story with the heroes of The Lies of Locke Lamora back at their larcenous best. There's plenty of adventure, danger, and some romance as well. And did I mention pirates! Very highly recommended.
