The Chessmen of Mars - Edgar Rice Burroughs

The Chessmen of Mars is the fifth novel in Burroughs' Barsoom series. Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was one of the greats of science fiction. This book is available through:

John Carter's daughter Tara is a true princess of Mars. When Tara is claimed by Gahan, Jed of Gathol, for the Dance of Barsoom, it's clear that Gahan falls in love with her. Tara is already betrothed to Djor Kantos, and resists Gahan's advances. Then in a tantrum Tara decided to go out flying alone and is lost in a monumental storm. It is Gahan who pursues her around Barsoom and finally finds her prisoner of the Kaldane. Eventually they escape, with a Kaldane ally, but then are captured by the Manator. Tara is beginning to fall for Gahan, but before they can pursue their love, they have to escape or be rescued. That could take a long time. Highly recommended. I'll admit that all the chasing after and rescuing women is beginning to get old. Time for a change.
