The Cleaner is the first novel in the John Milton Series. It's hard to retire from being an assassin.

John Milton is the best assassin in the top secret British organization Group Fifteen. John is known as Number One. John started his carrier as Number Twelve. That was ten years ago, and now John is having second thoughts. Second thoughts are not acceptable in Group Fifteen. John failed to kill a witness to his last assignment, even though that witness was a five year old boy. Now he's on his own. John's going to try and make up for some of the damage he's done. The trouble is Group Fifteen is now targeting John. This book gets bogged down a bit, but picks back up at the end. It's a great start to a new series. Highly recommended.
